Political lean describes where an outlet sits within the politics of its own country. It is never a position on a single global scale.

Political lean is comparable inside one country and not across them, which is why the bar groups by country first. Publicly funded broadcasters are not marked as state-linked.

The owner of each outlet is listed as a matter of record, not as a judgement about the outlet.

Every outlet covering this story shares the same political lean; read with that in mind.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced a sweeping new initiative called Operation Economic Outcast on Monday, aimed at economically isolating Iran to force an end to a six month war. The plan warns foreign governments and companies that they could lose access to the U.S. financial system if they continue to do business with Tehran. Bessent stated that the Iranian regime must choose between severe global isolation or a path to reintegration with the global economy. The Treasury Department has broadened the types of secondary sanctions it may impose and implemented fresh direct sanctions on dozens of entities linked to Iran. Additionally, the administration ended certain exemptions that previously allowed remittance payments and access to U.S. cultural and academic universities for Iranians.

U.S. officials from the Treasury, State, and Pentagon departments are coordinating with global counterparts to seek immediate action. While Bessent stopped short of immediately penalizing large financial institutions in China, he asserted that no one is above the reach of U.S. sanctions. This strategy puts China in a difficult position, as it is Iran's most important economic partner and buys approximately 90 percent of its oil exports. The push for economic isolation comes ahead of an expected summit between President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in September.

Domestic reactions to the strategy vary. Former Trump economic advisor Stephen Moore stated that China is key to the success of these secondary sanctions. Conversely, Representative Jake Auchincloss, a Democrat from Massachusetts, described the conflict as a failed and illegal war. Auchincloss stated he would not vote for any funding for the effort, arguing that the administration is seeking an exit from a war it has lost.
