Trial Begins for Suspect Accused of Orchestrating Tupac Shakur Murder

The trial of Duane Keith Davis has begun in Las Vegas, Nevada. Davis is the only person ever charged in the 1996 killing of rapper Tupac Shakur. He faces one count of murder with a deadly weapon and has pleaded not guilty. If convicted, Davis faces up to life in prison.

Prosecutors allege that Davis orchestrated the killing in retaliation for an assault on his nephew. While the prosecution does not claim that Davis fired the fatal shots, they intend to prove that he was the mastermind who provided the weapon. Defense attorneys argue there is no evidence that Davis ordered the murder.

Tupac Shakur was 25 years old when he was shot on September 7, 1996, while traveling with Death Row Records co-founder Marion Suge Knight. Shakur died six days later in a hospital. Three other men who were in the car with Davis that night, Orlando Anderson, Terrence Brown, and Deandre Smith, have since died.

A jury consisting of 10 women and 6 men has been selected for the case. Davis waived his right to be sentenced by the jury, meaning a judge will determine his sentence if he is found guilty. The proceedings are expected to last approximately one month.

Mopreme Shakur, the half-brother of the rapper, expressed skepticism regarding the possibility of achieving true justice. In an interview with the BBC, he stated that the justice he desires is impossible because his brother cannot be brought back. He described the pain experienced by the family and fans as immeasurable.
