U.S. President Donald Trump and the Iranian government have issued contradictory statements regarding the status of negotiations to end a five month war. President Trump asserted on Monday that talks are currently underway at the request of Iran and with the support of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar. He described these discussions as a last chance for Tehran to sign a good agreement before facing what he termed decapitation. Trump stated that the first phase of a potential deal involves the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, while the second phase would address the denuclearization of Iran.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei denied that any direct negotiations with the United States are taking place. He stated that Iran is only conducting discussions with Oman to establish a temporary safe navigation route through the Strait of Hormuz. Baghaei maintained that there would be no change in the situation as long as U.S. military aggression and the naval blockade persist.
