President Donald Trump has declared the Strait of Hormuz to be new United States territory and stated that there are no ongoing or planned negotiations with Iran. In a post on Truth Social, Trump shared a map labeling the waterway as US territory and asserted that the strait is open and operational with all sea mines removed. A senior Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran is shifting to a fully offensive posture due to the diplomatic stalemate. Meanwhile, the UK Maritime Trade Operations reported that a vessel was struck by an unknown projectile in the strait, resulting in engine room damage and a crew casualty.
Shipping data indicates that traffic through the strait remains severely disrupted, with daily crossings remaining in the single digits. This is a significant decrease from the more than 130 vessels that transited the waterway daily before the war began. The conflict has caused global energy prices to rise and has created domestic political pressure for the Trump administration ahead of the November midterm elections. While Trump maintains that the US has total control via its blockade, experts cited in several reports suggest that neither side possesses full control of the waterway.
