Trump Increases Beef Imports to Combat Rising Consumer Prices

President Donald Trump signed a decree on Wednesday to temporarily increase the import of lean beef by 300,000 tariff free tons. The White House stated that the measure is intended to lower beef prices for United States consumers, which have risen significantly this year. According to Federal Reserve Economic Data, the price of ground beef rose 18 percent compared to last year, reaching 6.759 dollars per kilogram in January. The Department of Labor reported that beef inflation was 9.4 percent for the 12 months ending in July. These price increases follow droughts and wildfires that reduced the U.S. cattle herd to its lowest level in 75 years.

The decision has faced strong opposition from the American Farm Bureau Federation and various agricultural groups. The federation stated in a letter to the president that reducing tariffs would harm U.S. livestock producers. Republican Senator Deb Fischer of Nebraska and Senator Tim Sheehy also criticized the move on X, arguing that flooding the market with foreign beef undermines the domestic industry.

In Brazil, the Association of Brazilian Beef Exporters (Abiec) noted that the measure could represent an opportunity for the Brazilian sector. Separately, Trump spoke with Glenn Beck about alleged monopolies in the meat processing industry. He mentioned hearing about monopoly problems for 20 years regarding the four largest companies in the sector, two of which are Brazilian.
