President Donald Trump announced on Monday that the United States will not extend the 60 day memorandum of understanding with Iran, which expired that day. During a phone interview with Fox News, Trump stated that Iran should put up the white flag of surrender and claimed that Tehran would not agree to the type of deal he considers necessary. He reiterated that preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon remains a non negotiable goal. Trump also threatened to bomb Oman, a U.S. ally, if the country gets in the way of U.S. efforts to negotiate an agreement over the Strait of Hormuz. Oman has been conducting parallel negotiations with Iran to restore commercial shipping through the strait, which has been severely disrupted since the conflict began on February 28. Trump previously made similar threats against Oman in May. In response to the expiration of the truce, a senior Iranian official told Reuters that Iran may shift to a fully offensive military posture and could intensify tensions in the Strait of Hormuz if diplomacy fails. Meanwhile, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan urged Trump to continue negotiations with Iran and offered Turkey's support for peace efforts. Other reports indicate that while Trump claims to have a backchannel with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the IRGC has denied these claims. Internally, reports suggest Iranian leaders are concerned that further U.S. economic pressure could ignite mass unrest due to high inflation and damaged infrastructure.
