Two people died on Friday when a small aircraft crashed near the coastal city of Zadar in Croatia. The aircraft, a German registered Diamond HK36 Super Dimona motor glider, was traveling from the Czech Republic to Zadar when contact was lost shortly after 4 p.m. local time.
Search teams located the wreckage and the bodies of the two passengers in the Velebit mountains, specifically within the Paklenica National Park, approximately 60 kilometers northeast of Zadar. Authorities reported that the recovery effort took nearly six hours due to challenging terrain and severe weather conditions, including wind, heavy rain, and fog that reduced visibility to around 2 meters. These conditions prevented the use of search drones, requiring a 35 person rescue team to reach the site.
Officials have not yet released the identities or nationalities of the victims. However, the Czech Foreign Ministry stated that the individuals were not Czech citizens.
