Typhoon Saudel Disrupts Travel and Weather Across East Asia

Typhoon Saudel, known in the Philippines as Obet, is moving west northwest through the Pacific, causing widespread travel disruptions in Taiwan and threatening to enhance monsoon rains in the Philippines. As of Monday afternoon, the storm was located approximately 1,340 kilometers east of Taiwan with maximum sustained winds of up to 184 kph. While Taiwan's Central Weather Administration states that the typhoon is unlikely to make landfall, its circulation is expected to affect northern Taiwan and the Matsu islands between Thursday and Friday.

In Taiwan, several airlines have adjusted their schedules for Tuesday flights between Taiwan and Okinawa. Tigerair and Starlux Airlines have moved some flights earlier, while China Airlines has cancelled services between Taichung and Naha as well as Kaohsiung and Naha. EVA Air has maintained its schedule but is offering fee free ticket changes for certain travel windows. Additionally, the Maritime and Port Bureau has suspended 55 ferry services across four routes, and the Civil Aviation Administration reported 33 domestic flight cancellations due to heavy rain.

In the Philippines, the storm entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility at 1:20 pm on Monday. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration reports that while the typhoon will stay far from land and likely exit the area within 12 hours, it will enhance the southwest monsoon. This is expected to bring significant rainfall to provinces such as Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro through Thursday, with potential for flash floods and landslides.
