Ugandan Football Captain David Owori Killed in Kampala Robbery

David Owori, the 27 year old captain of Sports Club Villa and a member of the Uganda national team, died on Wednesday after being fatally assaulted during a robbery in Kampala. Police and witnesses report that Owori was attacked on Tuesday night near his home in the Makindye suburb after he resisted an attempt to steal his mobile phone and other belongings. Attackers reportedly hit him with paving stones before fleeing the scene. Owori was rushed to a medical clinic and later transferred to a private facility, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Owori was a versatile player who operated as a right back and midfielder. He helped SC Villa secure a record 17th Uganda Premier League title in 2024 and had previously played in Europe with Sweden's Utsiktens BK and Spain's Velez CF. The Federation of Uganda Football Associations and SC Villa both released statements describing him as a leader and an inspiration to a generation. In honor of the player, the Ugandan parliament observed a minute of silence on Wednesday and called for a swift investigation.

Local police spokesperson Rachael Kawala stated that detectives are currently pursuing leads to identify the suspects. The incident has sparked public anger over violent crime in the capital, coming only weeks after the death of rugby international Sydney Gongodyo, who was also fatally attacked in Kampala.
