The governments of the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia issued a joint statement on Friday calling Israel's decision not to pursue a criminal investigation into a deadly 2024 strike on a World Central Kitchen convoy "shameful." The three nations stated that the decision was both too little and too late, noting that they had spent more than two years pressing Israel for accountability. They further described the timing of the announcement on World Humanitarian Day as particularly egregious.
The incident involved a drone strike on a vehicle convoy that killed seven aid workers, including citizens of Britain, Poland, Australia, and a dual US Canadian national, as well as a Palestinian. While the Israeli military called the event a tragic mistake and acknowledged errors at various levels of command, a preliminary investigation concluded there was no reasonable suspicion of criminal misconduct. Israel's foreign ministry stated that the decision was made by independent military prosecution authorities based on professional and legal considerations.
World Central Kitchen condemned the decision as deeply offensive and inconsistent with the truth, arguing that the IDF cannot credibly investigate its own conduct. In response to the closure of the probe, Australia summoned Israel's ambassador to the country on Thursday.
