UK Government Announces £65 Million Drought Support Package for Farmers

The UK government has announced a £65 million support package for farmers to mitigate the effects of widespread drought and falling crop yields. The measures include flexibility in environmental subsidy schemes, allowing farms to use protected areas of grass for feed without losing subsidies. The plan also provides funding and fewer restrictions for building on-farm reservoirs, including a specific £15 million fund for these projects, and grants easier access to water during periods of scarcity. The funding will be drawn from the existing budget of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated that farmers are at the sharp end of a changing climate and should not carry that risk alone, noting that food production is a matter of national security.
