According to reports, the Trump administration is seeking ways to incentivize the UK to increase its defense investment. A senior US official told The Telegraph that the US is reviewing the commitment of Nato allies to defense spending and that the UK will receive special attention. The official suggested that changing the US stance on the UK claim to the Falklands is a possibility as part of efforts to encourage burden sharing. The Treasury confirmed that the first budget from chancellor John Healey will not specify when the UK will meet the target of allocating 3 percent of GDP to defense. While the Foreign Office has treated a shift in US position as a hypothetical scenario, Downing Street insisted that the sovereignty of the islands is not in question. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch dismissed the possibility of a US policy review as absolute nonsense. Admiral Lord West of Spithead stated that a loss of US recognition would have no military impact on the security of the islands.
