UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham Pledges Relentless Action Against Illegal Migration

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has vowed to be relentless in his efforts to halt small boat crossings in the English Channel and tackle the smuggling gangs behind illegal migration. During a visit to Dover on Sunday, the Prime Minister stated that he is not complacent and announced a boost in the number of officers deployed to combat human smuggling. According to reports, the number of National Crime Agency officers tackling organized immigration crime has more than doubled from 376 to nearly 800 since the start of 2025. Additionally, more than 1,000 small boats or engines have been seized since the Labour government took power in 2024.

Mr. Burnham noted that while crossings are down significantly compared to the same period last year, over 2,000 people have crossed the Channel since he became Prime Minister on July 20. He emphasized the need to bring back border control while simultaneously building a system of safe routes to remove the selling point for smuggling gangs. Mr. Burnham also addressed a separate crisis in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, where over 60 people died after approximately 60,000 migrants crossed from Morocco. He stated that he has been in contact with Spanish leader Pedro Sanchez and noted that about 98 percent of those individuals have been returned to Morocco.
