Ukraine Launches Large Scale Drone Attack on Moscow Region

Ukrainian forces launched a large scale drone attack targeting Moscow and the surrounding region overnight on August 18. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin reported that over 600 drones were launched at the region, with at least 197 shot down over Moscow Oblast. These figures could not be independently verified.

Reports indicate that a Wildberries warehouse, the company's largest facility, was damaged during the strikes. Ukraine's Defense Ministry confirmed the attack on the warehouse, noting that the retailer lists military equipment such as drone components and body armor on its website. Other reported damages include a car and a transformer substation in Elektrostal, as well as fires at an aluminum plant in Moscow Oblast and a residential building in Pavlovsky Posad, which reportedly occurred when Russian air defenses attempted to down drones.

This event follows a similar attack on August 16 that also targeted a Wildberries warehouse. Additionally, reports from the Sunday Times suggest that the Ukrainian army may have used British drones for attacks deep within Russia for the first time. The Russian embassy in London threatened consequences for the United Kingdom, while a British government spokesperson rejected these threats and affirmed continued support for Ukraine.
