Ukraine Reports Territorial Gains Amid Intensified Russian Missile and Drone Strikes

Ukraine has declared the liberation of 26 settlements and the recapture of 745 square kilometers of territory in the Dnipropetrovsk region. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated the operation was successful and resulted in the deaths of nearly 10,000 Russian soldiers. The Institute for the Study of War provided a more conservative estimate, assessing that Ukraine clawed back at least 627 square kilometers in that area. This success comes as Russia intensifies its aerial campaign using ballistic, hypersonic, and drone attacks.

Recent Russian strikes have caused significant casualties across multiple regions. Over a single day ending August 14, Russian attacks killed at least four people and injured 60 others. Specific reports include three deaths in Sumy Oblast, one death in Donetsk Oblast, and injuries in Kherson, Kharkiv, Odesa, Chernihiv, and Zaporizhzhia. In the town of Smila, within the Cherkassy region, Russian drone strikes caused a fire in a nine story residential building and injured five people. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 90 out of 133 Shahed type drones launched overnight on August 14.

Military officials note a shift in Russian tactics toward ballistic and hypersonic missiles, which Ukraine can primarily intercept using Patriot systems. President Zelenskyy claimed that Ukraine has received nearly three times fewer interceptors this year from allies compared to 2025. Meanwhile, Ukraine has scaled up its production of first person view drones, which reportedly caused more than 70 percent of Russian casualties in June and July.
