Ukraine Reports Territorial Gains and Strikes Russian Black Sea Port

President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on August 12 that Ukrainian forces have liberated 745 square kilometers of territory in the Oleksandrivka sector since January. This operation, which spanned parts of the Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Donetsk oblasts, reportedly returned 26 villages to Ukrainian control and resulted in at least 9,550 Russian soldiers killed and over 6,600 wounded. While center and center-left reports highlight these gains as precise and effective, some analysts cautioned that assessing control in gray zones along the front line remains difficult.

Simultaneously, Ukraine carried out a strike on the Russian Black Sea Fleet naval base in Novorossiysk. According to the Ukrainian General Staff, four Russian warships were damaged, including two frigates, a small missile ship, and a patrol ship. President Zelensky stated that the attack utilized Palianytsia jet-powered drones, Neptune anti-ship cruise missiles, and naval drones to target piers and port infrastructure. Russian regional Governor Veniamin Kondratyev reported that the attack killed at least two people, including an eight-year-old child, and injured eight others. Reports also indicate that a grain terminal was damaged and temporarily suspended operations.

In a separate development, the Ukrainian air force announced it will stop publishing detailed figures regarding Russian ballistic missile strikes, though real-time warnings will continue. This change comes as President Zelensky appeals to the United States for more Patriot interceptors. In an interview with CNN, Zelensky stated that Ukraine needs 5 percent of US Patriot stocks to survive the winter and 10 percent to destroy all Russian ballistic missiles.
