Ukraine Strengthens Donetsk Defenses and Strikes Major Russian Oil Refinery

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appointed commanders Andrii Biletskii and Denys Prokopenko to lead reorganized units tasked with reinforcing Ukrainian positions in the Donetsk region. The move comes as Russian forces apply pressure to critical strongholds including Kostiantynivka, Kramatorsk, and Sloviansk. Some analysts describe the appointments as a shift toward Nato style doctrine and network centric warfare, contrasting the approach with the micromanagement associated with previous leadership. During a visit to the front line, Zelenskyy met with units in the Oleksandrivka sector at the junction of the Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, and Donetsk oblasts.

In a separate development, Ukraine's General Staff confirmed a drone strike on the NORSI Lukoil oil refinery in Kstovo, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. The facility, which is one of Russia's largest gasoline producers, caught fire following the attack. President Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine struck 16 targets in Russia over a 24 hour period, including oil facilities, airfields, a military enterprise, and logistics infrastructure. Other reports indicate a drone attack targeted a Wildberries warehouse in the Tambov region.

Russia has continued its strikes within Ukraine. A guided aerial bomb damaged a combined heat and power plant in Kherson, and ballistic missiles struck an industrial facility in Kryvyi Rih, injuring two people. Explosions were also reported in Kyiv. Meanwhile, Ukraine is preparing a sanctions package targeting over 100 companies that manufacture parts for Russian ballistic missiles. In other developments, President Zelenskyy awarded the Order of Freedom to Elon Musk, and both nations recently exchanged 10 prisoners of war each.
