Russia has suspended crude oil exports from the Sheskharis terminal at the port of Novorossiysk in the Black Sea. According to reports citing industry sources, the suspension follows a large scale Ukrainian drone attack on August 12 and subsequent drone threats on August 14. The Sheskharis terminal is Russia's primary oil export facility in the Black Sea, typically processing around 700,000 barrels of crude per day.
Operational disruptions included a tanker departing the port without its cargo due to drone alerts. The terminal stopped loading crude oil and ceased receiving oil because storage tanks reached capacity. Additionally, three grain terminals in Novorossiysk had already halted operations following the August 12 strike.
President Volodymyr Zelensky described the August 12 operation as unique, stating that Ukrainian forces used Palianytsia jet powered drones, Neptune anti ship cruise missiles, and naval drones to hit piers, port infrastructure, and air defense positions. Regional governor Veniamin Kondratyev reported that the attack killed an 8 year old boy and injured eight other people. Zelensky vowed to continue strikes on Russian ports in retaliation for ballistic missile attacks on Ukrainian cities.
On August 14, the Russian Foreign Ministry rejected a Ukrainian offer for a truce in the Black Sea, with spokesperson Maria Zakaharova stating that reviving the 2022 to 2023 Black Sea grain initiative would be ill advised.
