The United Nations has warned that the Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo is progressing exponentially, with the death toll now exceeding 2,500 people. Julien Harneis, the UN senior Ebola coordinator, stated that the outbreak covers an area larger than France and that half of the total deaths occurred within the last 20 days. This current outbreak is the deadliest in the history of the country, surpassing the 2018 to 2020 epidemic in just three months. Some reports indicate that the virus is expanding three times faster than the 2014 to 2016 West African outbreak.

This has led to attacks on health facilities and workers, with over 260 attacks reported in the last six months. UN officials warned that the epidemic risks spreading to neighboring countries if resources and staffing are not urgently increased.
