UN Warns of Exponential Ebola Expansion in Democratic Republic of Congo

The United Nations has warned that an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is expanding at an exponential rate, with resources for the response running low. Since the government declared a state of emergency on May 15, reports indicate between 4,945 and 5,290 cases and between 2,325 and 2,516 deaths. One source reports that a person is dying every 30 minutes. The affected area now exceeds the size of France, and the UN has called for immediate international funding to prevent the response from being overwhelmed.

Containment efforts are severely hindered by decades of armed conflict and poor infrastructure. Health workers have faced attacks, ambulances have been burned, and medical facilities have been targeted. At least 160 health professionals have contracted the virus, with 43 deaths reported. Logistics are further complicated by a failing banking system that makes paying frontline workers difficult, as well as poor connectivity and dangerous roads. In response to the risk of the virus spreading via waterways, Kinshasa is launching the Congo River without Ebola surveillance system.
