- A hatched block means the outlet is affiliated with, or controlled by, a state.
Political lean describes where an outlet sits within the politics of its own country. It is never a position on a single global scale.
Political lean is comparable inside one country and not across them, which is why the bar groups by country first. Publicly funded broadcasters are not marked as state-linked.
The owner of each outlet is listed as a matter of record, not as a judgement about the outlet.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the United States will impose the toughest sanctions in history on Iran to collapse the regime and reduce the need for large scale military operations. This follows a social media post by President Donald Trump on Wednesday promising economic warfare and isolation on an unprecedented scale. Bessent stated in a CNBC interview that the strategy is a one two punch combining a naval blockade with severe sanctions. He warned that any country providing a lifeline to Iran will face tremendous economic consequences, adding that allies are either with the US or against it. Further details are expected at a press conference on Monday, August 24.
Oil prices rose to a three week high following the announcement. Bessent argued that the markets are misinterpreting the situation, claiming the US maintains control of the Strait of Hormuz and can continue extracting energy through the southern lane. However, data cited by Reuters and CNN indicates that shipping through the strait remains low. China, which buys more than 80 percent of Iran's shipped oil, has called for political and diplomatic solutions, while Bessent suggested that China would benefit from joining the US effort because it relies on the Gulf for half of its energy.
Iran's foreign ministry condemned the moves as economic terrorism and stated that the sanctions would not deter the nation's determination to safeguard its sovereignty. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi suggested the threats are an attempt to divert attention from US domestic financial problems. Additionally, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned it could use more destructive weapons if the conflict restarts, and some Iranian officials suggested the country might withdraw from the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty.
In other regional developments, the US administration imposed new sanctions on Hezbollah and redesignated the group as an Iranian proxy. Meanwhile, the USS George Washington has arrived in the Middle East to relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln, which is returning home after an extended deployment that reportedly affected crew mental health.
