- A hatched block means the outlet is affiliated with, or controlled by, a state.
Political lean describes where an outlet sits within the politics of its own country. It is never a position on a single global scale.
Political lean is comparable inside one country and not across them, which is why the bar groups by country first. Publicly funded broadcasters are not marked as state-linked.
The owner of each outlet is listed as a matter of record, not as a judgement about the outlet.
The United States economy unexpectedly lost 23,000 jobs in July, according to data released Friday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The unemployment rate fell to 4.1 percent from 4.2 percent, though some analysts attribute this dip to a decline in labor force participation. The participation rate fell to 61.4 percent, which is its lowest level in five years. Approximately 264,000 people left the labor force entirely.
Job losses were most significant in the government sector, which shed 53,000 jobs, largely driven by a loss of 49,000 positions in local education. The retail trade sector lost 19,000 jobs, while leisure and hospitality shed 40,000 jobs. Conversely, the healthcare sector saw growth, adding 22,000 jobs. June's figures were also revised downward to a gain of 20,000 jobs.
Outlets with center and center-right leans framed the report as a political setback for President Trump and a blow to his claims of an economic revival ahead of midterm elections. A center-left outlet focused more on the systemic economic struggle, citing a low-hire, low-fire environment and the fact that wage growth is being outpaced by inflation. These developments have influenced expectations for the Federal Reserve, with some experts now predicting the central bank will hold interest rates steady at its September meeting.
