US envoy and son in law of President Donald Trump, Jared Kushner, met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem on Monday to discuss a stalled peace plan for the Gaza Strip. This meeting followed a rare Sunday session in Cairo between Kushner and the new leader of Hamas, Khalil al-Hayya. Kushner was accompanied in his meetings by Nickolay Mladenov, the high representative for Gaza on Trump's Board of Peace. Some reports also indicated that former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair attended the Jerusalem talks.
The diplomatic push centers on a US backed plan that involves the disarmament of Hamas and a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, supported by an International Stabilization Force. While Hamas has expressed commitment to the roadmap, Netanyahu has publicly rejected the agreement. He insists that Israeli troops will not withdraw until Hamas and other armed groups are completely disarmed. Diplomats suggest that Netanyahu is unlikely to make major concessions before the Israeli national elections on October 27.
During the Cairo talks, Kushner reportedly demanded that Hamas verify its disarmament and renounce any future role in governing Gaza. In response, Hamas officials stated they are awaiting a US response regarding Israel's position and requested that Washington pressure Netanyahu's government to implement the agreement. Meanwhile, Palestinian Authority officials in Ramallah expressed concern that direct US engagement with Hamas sidelines the PA as the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people.
Beyond Gaza, other regional tensions persist. President Trump recently stated on Truth Social that he will not allow Iran to obtain nuclear weapons. He also threatened to bomb Oman if the country hampers US efforts to secure a deal regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, the Houthi militia in Yemen claimed to have attacked Saudi Arabian naval vessels in the Red Sea on Monday.
