- A hatched block means the outlet is affiliated with, or controlled by, a state.
Political lean describes where an outlet sits within the politics of its own country. It is never a position on a single global scale.
Political lean is comparable inside one country and not across them, which is why the bar groups by country first. Publicly funded broadcasters are not marked as state-linked.
The owner of each outlet is listed as a matter of record, not as a judgement about the outlet.
The United States has launched a sweeping economic campaign called Operation Economic Outcast, which Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described as an economic D Day aimed at severing all financial lifelines for Iran. The offensive targets five key sectors: digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping. As part of the initial rollout, the US sanctioned approximately 60 entities, individuals, and vessels involved in Iran's nuclear and missile programs, cyber operations, and oil revenue generation. Secretary Bessent warned that any country or entity continuing to trade with Iran risks being removed from the US dollar based financial system, though he noted that some partners would be given a grace period to wind down their activities.
Iran responded by stating it is fully prepared for the measures. Economy Minister Ali Madanizadeh claimed the government has a two year plan to manage the sanctions and predicted another defeat for Washington. Iranian officials and members of the Supreme National Security Council warned that countries joining the US economic war could be considered enemies. Iran has threatened to retaliate by targeting US economic interests in the region or shutting down all oil exports from the Persian Gulf, including the Strait of Hormuz.
China, a primary buyer of Iranian oil, stated that its cooperation with Iran is within international law and should not be subject to interference. The Chinese Foreign Ministry asserted that it would take all necessary measures to protect its rights and interests. Some analysts expressed doubt regarding the effectiveness of the sanctions, noting that a large portion of Iranian oil flows to China, which has historically ignored US sanctions.
Diplomatic efforts continue amid the escalation. Pakistan recently hosted talks with Iranian officials to promote regional stability and discuss the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. This follows a period of conflict that began in February, which has seen thousands of deaths and the degradation of some of Iran's conventional military capacity.
