- A hatched block means the outlet is affiliated with, or controlled by, a state.
Political lean describes where an outlet sits within the politics of its own country. It is never a position on a single global scale.
Political lean is comparable inside one country and not across them, which is why the bar groups by country first. Publicly funded broadcasters are not marked as state-linked.
The owner of each outlet is listed as a matter of record, not as a judgement about the outlet.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has unveiled Operation Economic Outcast, a sanctions campaign targeting more than 60 individuals, entities, and vessels to isolate the Iranian economy. Bessent described the initiative as an economic D Day, threatening to cut off any country or organization that maintains economic transactions with Iran from the US dollar based financial system. The sanctions include targets in mainland China, Hong Kong, and India, specifically focusing on firms that facilitate Iranian oil imports or help Tehran acquire sensitive technology. Among the sanctioned entities are several Hong Kong based firms accused of acting as intermediaries for nuclear and missile research equipment, as well as shipping companies involved in transporting Iranian crude.
China, the largest buyer of Iranian oil, has rejected the sanctions and stated that its cooperation with Iran should not be disrupted. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian warned that unilateral sanctions lack international legal basis and will only intensify tensions. While the US has targeted some Chinese firms, it has stopped short of sanctioning major Chinese financial institutions. Secretary Bessent stated that no one is above the reach of US sanctions, but he declined to provide a timeline for further actions, noting that he did not want to blow up the global financial system.
Iran has vowed to retaliate against the expanded measures. Iranian Minister of Economic Affairs Ali Madanizadeh stated that Tehran is prepared and warned that enemies should expect an attack. Meanwhile, analysts suggest the US is cautious about targeting Chinese banks due to Beijing's monopoly on rare earth minerals, which are critical for US aerospace and semiconductor industries. In a separate development, Canada has announced retaliatory tariffs of up to 50 percent on approximately 700 US products in response to tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.
