US Lawmakers Demand Answers After Reports of Mental Health Crisis Aboard USS Abraham Lincoln

Democratic lawmakers are demanding a formal inquiry into the conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln after reports that several sailors attempted to jump overboard. The aircraft carrier has been deployed for more than 250 days since leaving San Diego in November 2025; it has spent over 200 consecutive days at sea without making a port call. The ship was originally destined for the South China Sea but was rerouted to the Middle East to support operations in the war with Iran. A US official told CNN that one sailor went overboard last month and was quickly rescued and medically evaluated.

Senator Richard Blumenthal and Representative Mike Levin have cited reports of deteriorating living conditions on the ship. These reports include water contamination, plumbing issues, moldy showers, and shortages of basic supplies such as soap and toothpaste. Blumenthal also noted disruptions in the mail system that left care packages lost for months. In a letter to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao, Blumenthal requested details on how the Navy is assessing the mental health of the crew and the military objective of the extended deployment.

Family members of the crew have expressed grave concerns during town hall meetings. One spouse reported that her husband sent a message saying he hoped he would not wake up the next day. While the US Navy told CNN that it has not observed an increase in suicidal ideations or attempts and denies hygiene problems, it confirmed that mental health professionals and chaplains are available to the crew. Reports indicate that the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group is being prepared to relieve the Lincoln, though no specific timeline has been provided due to operational security.
