US Senate Democrats Urge Israel to Address West Bank Violence and Arrests

Forty five of the 47 members of the US Senate Democratic caucus signed a letter on Wednesday urging Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to rein in a surge of violence by West Bank settlers and mass arrests of Palestinians by Israeli security forces. The letter, drafted by Senators Adam Schiff, Cory Booker, and Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, highlights increasing levels of fatal violence by settlers and calls for investigations into the deaths of nine American citizens killed by settlers or security forces since 2022. The lawmakers urged Netanyahu to provide clear instructions to the Israeli police and military to intervene in violent confrontations regardless of who the perpetrators are. The letter also requested that the Israeli government stop approving additional settlements and illegal outposts in the West Bank and take steps to remove existing ones. These demands follow a recent incident where an Israeli man guarding Jewish settlers opened fire on Palestinian land, killing a 17 year old and a 70 year old man. While rights groups have documented slow responses by Israeli forces to settler violence, Israeli officials stated that the president and prime minister have repeatedly condemned violence against Palestinians. This move reflects growing friction between US Democrats and the Israeli government, with some lawmakers calling for the curtailment or cessation of billions of dollars in annual military aid. In a separate development, US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee denounced militant settlers as Israeli terrorists and suggested that those responsible for besieging the village of Qusra could face US sanctions. President Donald Trump has said little regarding the West Bank situation.
