US Senators and Families Demand Inquiry Into Conditions Aboard USS Abraham Lincoln

Democratic members of the US Senate and House of Representatives are demanding an official inquiry into the conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln following reports of a mental health crisis and deteriorating living standards. The aircraft carrier has been deployed for over 260 days in support of operations against Iran, spending more than 200 consecutive days at sea without a port call, which represents a modern day record.

Reports from military families and members of Congress describe a dire environment for the 5,000 sailors and Marines on board. Allegations include food shortages, rationed meals, broken plumbing, moldy showers, and a lack of basic hygiene products such as soap and toothpaste. More critically, reports from the Navy Times and Stars and Stripes indicate a severe mental health crisis, including multiple thwarted attempts by sailors to jump overboard.

Senator Richard Blumenthal wrote a letter to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao demanding accountability for these conditions. Senator Ruben Gallego and Representative Mike Levin have further called for oversight visits and criticized the administration for the strain placed on service members. In response to earlier reports of poor conditions, Secretary Hegseth dismissed the accounts as fake news. A Navy official later stated that the health and wellbeing of every sailor is a priority and acknowledged that extended deployments place significant strain on service members and their families.

The USS Abraham Lincoln departed San Diego on November 21, 2025. Originally destined for the South China Sea, it was rerouted to the Middle East following US Israeli attacks on Iran that began on February 28. The deployment, which was scheduled to end in May, has been extended multiple times.
