- A hatched block means the outlet is affiliated with, or controlled by, a state.
Political lean describes where an outlet sits within the politics of its own country. It is never a position on a single global scale.
Political lean is comparable inside one country and not across them, which is why the bar groups by country first. Publicly funded broadcasters are not marked as state-linked.
The owner of each outlet is listed as a matter of record, not as a judgement about the outlet.
The United States announced on Thursday that it has the capability to maintain a naval blockade of Iran indefinitely. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated during a trip to Panama that the U.S. military can sustain its presence by rotating ships in and out of the region. This announcement comes as Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent threatened to implement economic isolation measures against Iran next week that he described as having never been seen before in history. These measures aim to increase financial pressure on Tehran as ceasefire talks remain stalled.
Simultaneously, the United Arab Emirates condemned Iran for attacking two vessels affiliated with the state owned Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) in the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday evening. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs characterized the attacks as piracy and a direct threat to global energy security, though no injuries were reported. This follows a similar reported attack on an ADNOC tanker on August 8. Iran has effectively blocked the Strait of Hormuz since the conflict began in February, demanding the removal of sanctions and the release of frozen assets in exchange for reopening the waterway.
Vice President J.D. Vance stated on Fox News that the primary goal of the U.S. is now to keep oil and gas prices low for American consumers, while preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon has become the second priority. This shift in focus occurs as President Donald Trump faces domestic pressure due to high fuel prices and an unpopular war ahead of the November midterm elections. The International Energy Agency has revised its forecast for global oil supply, predicting a drop of 4.3 million barrels per day this year.
While President Trump has asserted that the U.S. has total control over the Strait of Hormuz, the Iranian military has dismissed these claims as inventions. The U.S. has previously redirected over 55 commercial vessels attempting to run the blockade, including a recent incident where a Navy helicopter fired missiles into the engine room of a Panama flagged ship.
