USS George Washington Arrives in Middle East as USS Abraham Lincoln Prepares to Return Home

The USS George Washington aircraft carrier arrived in the Middle East on Wednesday to relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln. US Central Command announced the arrival on Thursday. According to a US official, the USS Abraham Lincoln is now on its way back to San Diego after a deployment that lasted more than 250 days. Admiral Brad Cooper of US Central Command stated in a Wall Street Journal op-ed that he personally informed the service members aboard the ship that they were going home.

The relief comes amid reports of deteriorating conditions and low morale among the nearly 5,000 sailors and Marines on the Lincoln. Family members have described shortages of food, water, and basic necessities such as soap, toothpaste, and deodorant. Some families reported disrupted mail services and plumbing problems. One spouse told The Guardian that her husband appeared exhausted and that his meals seemed to lack sufficient calories. These reports prompted Democratic lawmakers to demand answers from the Pentagon.

Navy leadership has offered varying perspectives on the situation. A navy official stated that reports from the ship confirmed continuous access to clean water, functional air conditioning, and healthy meal options. Admiral Cooper noted that the Lincoln had among the lowest numbers of mental health cases of the navy's 11 active aircraft carriers, though he acknowledged that long deployments are uniquely challenging and tough.
