Wahl-O-Mat Tool Launches Ahead of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State Election

The state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will hold its state parliament election on September 20, with 19 parties permitted to run. To assist voters, the Wahl-O-Mat tool has been released, featuring 38 theses developed by a team of young voters, political scientists, statisticians, and educators based on party programs. The tool allows users to agree, disagree, or remain neutral on these points, and provides an option to weight specific topics as more important to see which party most closely aligns with their views.

The election is characterized as a primary contest between incumbent Minister President Manuela Schwesig of the SPD and AfD challenger Leif-Erik Holm. Current polling indicates the AfD is leading, with one source placing them at 36 percent and the SPD at 29 percent. While the AfD hopes for a government led by their party alone, analysts suggest a political stalemate is possible. The current red-red coalition of the SPD and the Left may lack a majority, potentially requiring a three-way alliance with the Greens if the latter surpass the five percent threshold.

Framing of the political climate differs by perspective. A center-left source emphasizes the warnings issued by Schwesig against the AfD and notes her personal popularity in approval ratings. A center-right source focuses on the historical dominance of the SPD in the region and the mathematical difficulty of forming a coalition given the CDU's incompatibility declarations. Key campaign issues include the local economy, shipyards, Nord-Stream pipelines, rural medical care, education, and security.
