WDR Journalist Faces Backlash Over Social Media Post Regarding Ceuta Migrant Surge

Georg Restle, an ARD correspondent and former head of the WDR political magazine Monitor, is facing criticism after posting a theory on X regarding the mass surge of migrants into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. Restle shared a quote from the US publication The Nation suggesting that the events were not a humanitarian crisis or anti colonial struggle, but rather part of efforts by a US Israeli Moroccan alliance to weaken a progressive European government, divide Europe, and undermine international law. While the original text in The Nation used a question mark, Restle presented the claim as a factual statement.

Felix Schotland, a member of the WDR Broadcasting Council and board member of the Cologne synagogue community, has filed a formal complaint with the broadcaster. Schotland argued that Restle spread far reaching political claims without distance or context, creating the impression that geopolitical events are steered by a conspiratorial network. Other critics, including politicians from the CDU and FDP, have characterized the post as antisemitism and antiamericanism. Conversely, influencer Tilo Jung defended Restle, suggesting that critics should apologize to the journalist.

Reports on the incident differ in their framing. A center left source describes the situation as a controversy over a questionable interpretation of events and notes the potential for the claims to align with antisemitic tropes. A center right source frames the incident more aggressively, labeling the post a conspiracy theory and asserting that Restle's lack of evidence means the post has nothing to do with journalism.
