The White House has asked the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) to outline possible actions should President Donald Trump reach a deal with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Kelly McKeague, the director of the DPAA, disclosed this during an online forum hosted by the National Committee on North Korea. He stated that the agency has informed the White House and the Defense Department that it is ready to engage with Pyongyang to recover the remains of U.S. troops killed during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953.
McKeague explained that the DPAA suggested two primary goals: the turnover of remains currently held by North Korea and the resumption of joint field missions, which last occurred in 2005. The agency envisions a program involving two teams operating at sites in Unsan and Chosin four times a year for 42 day periods. Approximately 5,300 U.S. troops are believed to still have remains in North Korea.
