Wildfires Break Out Across Southern France

Firefighters are battling multiple wildfires in southern France following a period of extreme heat and drought. In the Drôme region, a fire in the Claps massif has burned a total of 370 hectares. The blaze has been active for seven days, and four firefighters were recently reported as slightly injured, bringing the total number of injured personnel for that fire to eleven. Authorities have issued confinement orders for the village of Charens due to heavy smoke, though residents are not currently threatened. A total of 408 firefighters and several aircraft are deployed to the area.

Simultaneously, a fire broke out in the Lozère region on Sunday afternoon near the commune of Massegros-Causses-Gorges. This blaze, which may have been caused by a vehicle catching fire on a local road, burned between 90 and 153 hectares. The fire forced the evacuation of two hamlets in the municipality of La Tieule, affecting approximately 20 homes. Fire officials noted that the area is extremely dry due to an unprecedented drought. Around 220 to 270 firefighters, supported by water bombers, are working to contain the head of the fire.

Additionally, a small fire burned 20 hectares of vegetation at a military camp in Captieux, Gironde. This fire was left to burn freely because the terrain contains munitions. Meanwhile, reports indicate that Spain is also facing severe wildfires, including a blaze in the Huelva province that has engulfed around 8,000 hectares and forced nearly 500 evacuations.
