Wildfires in eastern Washington state have forced the evacuation of approximately 60,000 people in the Spokane area and destroyed at least 600 structures, including homes and businesses. Three separate blazes, identified as the Old Trails, Fairview, and Meadowview fires, burned about 21 square kilometers over the weekend. Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown described the event as the worst natural disaster the region has ever faced. Governor Bob Ferguson declared a statewide emergency and requested assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency after speaking with President Donald Trump.
Emergency officials reported no deaths or injuries as of Sunday, although they noted that the response effort is still in its early stages. Evacuees included patients from a US Veterans Affairs hospital. Approximately 10,000 electricity customers lost power due to the fires. A shelter was established at the city's main convention center, which housed about 400 people. The National Weather Service warned of extremely critical fire weather conditions caused by record drought, low humidity, and strong wind gusts between 56 and 72 kilometers per hour.
The crisis extends beyond Spokane. Approximately 1,000 square kilometers have burned across Washington state. In western Idaho and eastern Oregon, a lightning caused fire has burned nearly 1,360 square kilometers of grassland, threatening 600 homes and 800 other structures. In central Utah, a blaze more than doubled in size over the weekend to 145 square kilometers, killing more than 100 cattle. The National Weather Service issued red flag warnings for parts of Utah, Montana, and western Nebraska, as well as extreme heat warnings for parts of Arizona, California, and Nevada.
