A fast spreading wildfire in southern British Columbia has resulted in the death of an 80 year old woman and the evacuation of more than 20,000 people. The Bald Range fire, located near Lake Okanagan, has destroyed over 13,000 hectares. The victim died while attempting to leave her home with a relative in Meadow Valley, near Summerland. The town of Summerland, which has approximately 12,000 residents, was completely evacuated, and thousands of residents from Peachland and nearby communities were also forced to leave. Provincial authorities declared a state of emergency on Saturday to assist response efforts, attributing the fires to high temperatures and intense drought conditions. Smoke has hindered aerial firefighting operations and led to flight cancellations at the Kelowna airport. Across British Columbia, there have been over 100 active fires, with about 70 starting in the last week. On a national level, the Canadian government reported 591 active wildfires, with a total of 4,265 fires burning more than 3.6 million hectares of forest so far this year.
