Wildfires have spread across Greece, France, and Spain this summer, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate as record breaking heatwaves and drought persist. In Greece, gale force winds exceeding 73 kilometers per hour have complicated firefighting efforts near Porto Germeno, leading to evacuations in towns such as Agia Paraskevi and Agios Nektarios. In France, a fire in the Var department forced the overnight evacuation of nearly 2,500 people after flaring up again. Spain has battled multiple hot spots, including a fire in the Castellon province where police suspect arson. Beyond the fires, extreme heat has led to significant casualties, with thousands of heat related deaths reported in Germany, France, Britain, and Austria. Scientists state that these conditions have been exacerbated by climate change. Some reports highlight the phenomenon of climate whiplash, where unusually wet periods create dense vegetation that later dries out and becomes fuel. Additionally, intense fires have produced pyrocumulonimbus clouds, which can create their own thunderstorms and lightning to ignite new blazes. Other factors contributing to the severity include land abandonment in the countryside, which allows combustible shrubs and trees to accumulate where grazing once occurred.
