Yokohama Mayor Takeharu Yamanaka announced his resignation on Friday after admitting to bullying and verbally assaulting subordinates. A third party investigation report released in July found that Yamanaka abused his authority on multiple occasions and used terms such as "human scum" toward staff. These findings followed a January press conference where a senior city official, then head of the human resources department, publicly accused the mayor of verbal abuse.
Yamanaka stated at a press conference that his desire to improve citizens' lives did not excuse his inappropriate behavior. Although he initially expressed an intention to remain in office to restore public trust, he faced pressure from city assembly members and his own supporters. His resignation will trigger an election to take place within 50 days once the city assembly approves the move.
