President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has rejected calls for wartime elections following a request from his former defense minister, Mykhailo Fedorov. Fedorov, who was fired in July, delivered a video address on August 18 calling for a legal and realistic mechanism to resume the democratic process despite the ongoing war. Zelenskyy's office responded that planning elections during drone and missile attacks is extremely strange and demonstrates a complete lack of realism. According to an unpublished poll seen by The Economist, Zelenskyy currently leads a hypothetical presidential race with 21 percent support. Valerii Zaluzhnyi, the former commander in chief and current ambassador to the United Kingdom, follows with 18 percent, while Fedorov ranks third with 16 percent.
