Zelenskyy Visits Serbia Amid EU Ambitions and Kosovo Tension

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy conducted his first official visit to Serbia from August 7 to 9, where he met with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic in Belgrade. The two leaders focused heavily on Ukraine's bid for European Union membership. While Zelenskyy expressed optimism about becoming a full member of the EU, Vucic expressed skepticism regarding the possibility of achieving the necessary unanimity among member states. Vucic suggested that integration into the European single market and the Schengen area would be a more realistic intermediate step for candidate countries like Ukraine and Moldova.

The visit sparked significant controversy in Kosovo. During the talks, Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine's position that Kosovo is not an independent state. In response, officials in Kosovo expressed disappointment, and a large Ukrainian flag was removed from a building in Pristina. Kosovo's Foreign Minister Behgjet Pacolli called the remarks deeply disappointing, noting that Kosovo has consistently supported Ukraine during its war with Russia.

Center-leaning coverage emphasized the diplomatic fallout in Kosovo and the tension between Ukraine's need for support and its refusal to recognize Kosovar independence. Center-right coverage focused more on the strategic implications for Vucic, noting the risks he took by hosting Zelenskyy despite his russophile base and the potential for Moscow's irritation.
