Police in Goiás rescued a 13 year old girl on Wednesday after she disappeared from her home in Anápolis on Sunday. The girl had been locked inside an abandoned property with a chain and padlock. A 19 year old man was arrested at his place of work in connection with the incident. Upon his arrest, the suspect informed police of the location where the victim was being held.
According to the Civil Police, the suspect groomed the girl via the Discord platform and planned her disappearance to avoid leaving traces, which included disposing of her phone and identifying blind spots in security cameras. The girl left a letter for her family stating she did not know if she would ever return. A relative mentioned that friends of the girl believed the man had promised to take her to live in Canada.
Delegada Aline Lopes of the DPCA stated that the girl was found in good health without signs of aggression, although she initially resisted the rescue. The girl has since received psychological care and was returned to her family. The suspect faces charges of false imprisonment and statutory rape, as the victim is under 14 years old.
Discord issued a statement emphasizing its commitment to user safety. The company noted that its terms of service require users to be at least 13 years old and that it provides family tools and security teams to proactively remove content that violates its policies.
