17 Year Old Girl Killed in Swedish School Sword Attack

A 17 year old girl was killed and three other students were injured after an 18 year old man attacked people with a sword at Brinell School in Fagersta, Sweden, on Friday afternoon. The suspect, who is described as a student or former student of the school, was arrested at the scene and is being held on suspicion of murder and multiple counts of attempted murder. Among the injured were two boys aged 12 and 17 who sustained serious injuries, though one source described their injuries as minor. A third victim was treated for light injuries and has since been discharged from the hospital.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and opposition leader Magdalena Andersson visited Fagersta on Saturday to offer condolences and visit a memorial where flowers and candles had been placed. King Carl XVI Gustaf also expressed his sadness over the event. The attack occurred just days after students returned from summer break. Police reported that they fired shots during the incident, but later clarified that the suspect was not hit and did not require medical attention.

Investigators are examining the suspect's digital footprint, including a deleted TikTok account. Reports indicate the account posted a photo of a sword shortly before the attack and contained videos referencing previous school attacks and the Norwegian mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik. Police are investigating whether the suspect was influenced by online communities that promote school violence. Authorities have conducted two house searches and approximately 80 interviews, with plans to question nearly all of the school's 450 staff and students.

Several reports noted that this incident follows a pattern of school violence in Sweden. These include a 2015 sword attack in Trollhättan, which authorities called a racially motivated hate crime, a 2022 stabbing of two teachers in Malmö, and a mass shooting in Örebro in February 2025 that killed 10 people.
