An 18 year old man armed with a sword attacked students at Brinell high school in Fagersta, central Sweden, on Friday, August 21. The attack left one person dead and three others injured. Police later confirmed the deceased victim was a 17 year old girl. Among the injured were two boys, aged 12 and 17, who sustained serious injuries; one required emergency surgery. A third victim suffered minor injuries and has been released from the hospital.
The suspect was apprehended by police and is currently in detention. Investigators are probing the incident for murder and attempted murder. Police stated there is no reason to believe other perpetrators were involved. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and opposition leader Magdalena Andersson visited a memorial site on Saturday, where flowers and candles had been placed. The attack led several party leaders to cancel campaign speeches ahead of the September 13 election.
Swedish police are investigating the suspect's potential links to online communities that promote school violence. A police source indicated that investigators are examining a TikTok account that posted a photo of a sword shortly before the attack. The account reportedly contained videos referencing previous mass violence in Sweden and the Norwegian far right murderer Anders Behring Breivik.
