32 Suspects Detained Following Deadly Shooting in Overasselt

Thirty two individuals remain in detention after a violent attack in the Dutch village of Overasselt on Tuesday. The Public Prosecution Service announced on Friday that all 32 suspects are being investigated for murder or manslaughter of a 51 year old security guard, as well as attempted murder of two police officers who were wounded during the incident. The group is also suspected of illegal weapons possession. The suspects include sixteen French nationals, eleven Dutch nationals, two Algerians, one Libyan, one Ukrainian, and one Belgian. Two of the suspects are minors, aged 16 and 17, while the others range from 18 to 32 years old.

The incident began around 4:00 a.m. when a group of more than 30 heavily armed and masked men targeted a home belonging to a family allegedly involved in drug crime. One source reports the target was a 28 year old man, Jan G. who had previously been sentenced to four years for drug offenses. Justice Minister David van Weel stated that the event highlights a real problem with organized crime in the country, referencing known drug cartels.
