An 86 year old man has been reunited with climbing equipment he abandoned in an Austrian glacier more than six decades ago. The items, which included a backpack, ice axe, camera, and whistle, were discovered in July on the Sulztalferner glacier at an altitude of nearly 3,000 meters. Austrian police identified the owner through a weathered folder of documents found inside the bag.
The equipment was lost in August 1963 when the man fell into a crevasse while hiking with friends. Because the group was roped together, his companions were able to pull him to safety, but he discarded his backpack to reduce his weight during the rescue. Due to health reasons, the man could not travel to Tirol himself, so the items were returned to him via his son.
