Ademola Adeleke Secures Re-election as Governor of Osun State

Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party has been re-elected as the governor of Osun State following the August 15 governorship election. According to official results, Adeleke polled 511,067 votes, defeating the All Progressives Congress candidate Bola Oyebamiji, who received 444,815 votes. Dr. Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Congress finished third with 17,180 votes. The margin of victory was 66,252 votes, with Adeleke winning nineteen local government areas compared to eleven for the APC.

Following the announcement, several political figures congratulated Governor Adeleke. Former Governor Rauf Aregbesola and Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele both urged the governor to unite the state and govern inclusively across political divides. Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State also praised the outcome as a reflection of the people's choice and commended President Bola Tinubu for ensuring a level playing field for all candidates.

Reports indicate that President Tinubu called Governor Adeleke shortly after the collation process to congratulate him and state that the will of the people must prevail. This gesture was highlighted as a significant moment of democratic adherence, as no federal agencies or injunctions interfered with the declaration of the results.

Despite the victory, the political aftermath has sparked debate regarding Governor Adeleke's subsequent endorsement of President Tinubu for the 2027 presidential election. Some observers view this as political pragmatism necessary for state development and federal cooperation, while others question the consistency of supporting a president whose party was just defeated at the state level. Meanwhile, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele suggested that the APC should use the election's high voter turnout as a lesson to mobilize 10 million votes for President Tinubu in the south west for the 2027 cycle.
