Political lean describes where an outlet sits within the politics of its own country. It is never a position on a single global scale.

Political lean is comparable inside one country and not across them, which is why the bar groups by country first. Publicly funded broadcasters are not marked as state-linked.

Algeria severed diplomatic ties with the United Arab Emirates on Thursday, citing provocative and hostile acts. The Algerian Foreign Ministry stated that the decision followed the exhaustion of all avenues to preserve bilateral relations. As part of the move, Algeria will close its airspace to the UAE starting Friday, although commercial flights to and from Algiers will be permitted until the end of 2026. The UAE ambassador was given 48 hours to comply with the decision. In response, the Emirati Foreign Ministry expressed hope that the decision would be temporary and affirmed its appreciation for the Algerian people. Anwar Gargash, a diplomatic advisor to the UAE leader, stated on X that diplomatic relations should be based on rationality and clarity of interests rather than riddles.

The rupture follows years of strained relations over the UAE's expanding influence in northern and western Africa. Algeria has accused Abu Dhabi of working to destabilize countries in the Sahel and northern Africa, including Libya, Mali, and Sudan. Specifically, the UAE has been accused of supporting the RSF paramilitary in Sudan and Khalifa Haftar's administration in eastern Libya. Tensions are further exacerbated by the UAE's 2020 normalization of relations with Israel through the Abraham Accords, a move that conflicts with Algeria's priority of establishing a Palestinian state. Additionally, Algeria views the UAE's close ties with Morocco as a strategic threat, particularly regarding the territory of Western Sahara.

Outlets with a center lean focused on the immediate diplomatic actions and the specific regional conflicts cited by both nations. A center left outlet framed the event as a test of strength and a result of a hostile conjuration involving the UAE, Morocco, and Israel. A center outlet also highlighted the broader context of Algeria's deteriorating relations with Sahel states like Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, noting that the UAE's growing influence in those regions coincided with Algeria's diplomatic isolation from the AES states.
