Andrei Rodrigues Targeted for Arrest Amid Master Bank Scandal and STF Tensions

The Director General of the Federal Police, Andrei Rodrigues, is the subject of a preventive arrest request filed by the Novo party. This request follows the disclosure of messages from Daniel Vorcaro, owner of Banco Master, and a reserved testimony given to the office of Supreme Court Minister André Mendonça. The Novo party alleges that Rodrigues and his agents threatened Vorcaro to prevent a plea bargain that could have implicated the Director General, citing potential crimes of corruption, administrative advocacy, and the obstruction of criminal investigations.

Interlocutors for Rodrigues have rebutted these claims, stating that Vorcaro had the option to close a plea bargain agreement directly with the Prosecutor General's Office (PGR) instead of the Federal Police. They note that the PGR recently closed two other agreements related to the Master case. The PGR has since released an opinion defending the archiving of Vorcaro's request for testimony, arguing that the banker provided no evidence of threats and failed to address bank frauds or his relationships with politicians and STF ministers.

The case has sparked significant tension within the Supreme Court. President of the Court Edson Fachin stated that the evidence requires institutional action and emphasized that high office does not grant privileges. While center right framing focuses on the potential criminal conduct of the Federal Police director and the proximity between Vorcaro and Minister Alexandre de Moraes, center left framing highlights the possibility that the testimony was used as an electoral weapon by Minister André Mendonça or that the banker is attempting to avoid accountability for embezzlement.
