- A hatched block means the outlet is affiliated with, or controlled by, a state.
Political lean describes where an outlet sits within the politics of its own country. It is never a position on a single global scale.
Political lean is comparable inside one country and not across them, which is why the bar groups by country first. Publicly funded broadcasters are not marked as state-linked.
The owner of each outlet is listed as a matter of record, not as a judgement about the outlet.
AI company Anthropic announced on Thursday that it has disrupted multiple attempts to use its models for activities that could support the development of biological and conventional weapons. In a threat intelligence report covering activity between December 2025 and August 2026, the company detailed five case studies of potential biological misuse. These included requests for gain of function research to increase the virulence of the chikungunya virus, as well as research involving bird flu, orthopoxviruses, and novel toxins. Anthropic noted that it could not determine if these specific users had malicious intent or were conducting legitimate scientific research, but blocked the activity due to the risk of creating dangerous pathogens.
The report also identified the misuse of its Claude models for cyber espionage, surveillance, and the development of conventional weapons such as missiles, drones, and firearms. Anthropic attributed some of these activities to state sponsored groups, including those linked to Russia, China, and Iran, as well as criminal organizations and politically motivated individuals. The company stated that it has implemented stricter safeguards in its most recent models, such as Claude Fable 5, to restrict access to dual use biological research.
These revelations come amid broader industry tensions regarding AI safety. The report follows the resignation of a researcher who warned that AI companies are risking human lives in a race for autonomy. Other industry figures have called for voluntary slowdowns to implement necessary safeguards. Anthropic stated that it published the report because it believes it has a responsibility to disclose the malicious misuse of its services.
