Anthropic has announced that it will apply invisible watermarks to text and images generated by its Claude AI to comply with the European Union AI Act. The new system will use a statistical mark for text that remains present even after the content is copied and pasted. For files such as JPG, PNG, or SVG, the company will use signed provenance metadata based on the C2PA open standard. These measures apply to models launched on or after August 2, while older models will be upgraded by December 2.
Anthropic noted several limitations to the technology. Watermarks may be absent if the text is very short or has been heavily edited, paraphrased, or translated. Additionally, the company clarified that a watermark indicates the text was processed by Claude, but it does not confirm that the AI was the original author, as users often use the tool for proofreading or summarizing existing data.
While the move is driven by EU regulations, Anthropic stated it will deploy these watermarks globally. The company is also a signatory of a voluntary EU code of practice on transparency. Other industry players like Google and OpenAI have implemented similar systems, such as Google's SynthID. One report noted that Anthropic has not yet released a public detection tool as suggested by the EU code of good practices.
